We feed birds in our yard that don't go to the feeders to eat. It was so cold in the winter for a long time, we had to put seeds in the ground for The Yellowhammer. Other birds also found the seeds on the ground. Fortunately, we can soon stop feeding them in the winter. The birds get their own food from nature when the snow and ice melt.
For some strange reason, the woodpecker likes to go and eat on the ground. I've never seen anything like that in our yard. They usually eat the fat balls that are hanging on the rack.
