I was not aware of the chaga mushroom, and its devastating effect on a tree, Anne, until I looked it up on Wikipedia. Interesting, but I'm not sure about 'ugly'.
This has been studied to have health effects. It has been planted in trees by other forest owners. The tree in this picture is all dug out of the trunk. All that remains are deep empty cavities in the tree trunk. Happy New Year;-)
