    1. The flowers emerge from the bare ground after winter in early spring – around the same time that larks appear on the landscape. People have clearly noted this connection since ancient times, giving the plant names that refer to the lark. It flowers when the larks lay their eggs, but has time to ripen its seeds before the larks' offspring leave their nests.
